Firewatch hits 500,000 sales in its first month

Developer Campo Santo’s narrative-driven starlet, Firewatch, has sold roughly 500 thousand copies since its release on February 9.

“As an indie game, or heck, even as a ‘real’ game, ok fine not as a Call of Duty or Star Wars game, Firewatch can be considered a sale success,” publisher Panic said in a blog post. Panic also said it recouped its investment after Firewatch’s first day, which is easy to believe considering the game topped PS4 digital downloads for the month it released.

Strong sales could mean bigger and better things for Firewatch’s future. Campo Santo Founder Sean Vanaman said the PS4- and PC-only game could come to Xbox if it sold well at launch, which it most definitely has. Additionally, Panic teased “more to come” for the game, on top of ongoing patches and fixes.

“All of us find ourselves in the same weird afterglow of actually having done it, something I think feels weird and almost hilarious to all of us,” said Panic’s Cabel, recalling a celebratory after-party. “How did this happen? What are the odds? We made this thing. So I give [Sean Vanaman] a hug, and he leans in and says ‘let’s do this again.’ That’s how Firewatch really ends.”
