Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 is coming this August

One year of jump scares.

Five Nights at Freddy's 4 will release August 8, 2015, with a launch trailer due out in the coming weeks. Fittingly, the date also marks the one-year anniversary of the original.

Five Nights at Freddy's 4 was first revealed in April 2015, but creator Scott Cawthon only recently informed several YouTube channels of its launch date. YouTuber Razzbowski shared the information in the above video, citing an email that also reveals a planned add-on for the game. "To keep the Halloween date special," Cawthon will release a free update October 31.

Five Nights at Freddy’s began as a way to play on the widely held fear of animatronic characters and their unnatural movements. The now four-part series blends innate apprehension toward the dip these characters take in the uncanny valley with horror-inspired helplessness and sharp audio cues. It’s a simple and imperfect formula, but it’s proven itself more than just a cult classic or YouTube fodder. After all, in April 2015, a film adaptation of the game was picked up by Warner Bros.
