Follow Game of Thrones filming with new app

But will it boost tourism in Northern Ireland?

Game of Thrones fans will have the opportunity to follow the characters and crew using a new filming locations application, developed and launched by Northern Ireland Screen.

The Game of Thrones NI Locations app arrives just weeks before the return of the TV show, with season six of Game of Thrones expected to hit our screens on April 24th. It will include a reported 21 filming locations, including Ballintoy Harbour, Inch Abbey, Portstewart Strand and Tollymore Forest.

Richard Williams, the chief executive of Northern Ireland Screen, said: “We are delighted with how the app has turned out and would like to thank HBO for their tremendous support during development.

"Game of Thrones has now become a huge part of Northern Ireland culture and we know the appetite for information about the show is vast around the world."

The app has already hit the Google Play Store for Android devices, following its first stages of development, and is expected to reach the App Store at a later date. The idea of adding a selection of locations from past seasons is reportedly in the works, with Tourism Northern Ireland funding the app.

"We hope that the app will allow visitors and fans of Game of Thrones to see the massive part the Northern Ireland landscape plays in the series" Williams added.

Game of Thrones' spectacular sets and filming venues will be on show within this new application, which could lead to a boost in tourism for the areas involved – much like Skellig Michael in Dublin, as a result of its exposure in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Tourism NI's chief executive is also seemingly optimistic about the project. John McGrillen said: “The Game of Thrones locations app is a great innovation which will undoubtedly enhance the overall visitor experience.

"It will enable visitors to make the link between the Game of Thrones fantasy and the spectacular real-life setting here in Northern Ireland. We look forward to working in partnership with Northern Ireland Screen on further development of the app.”
