Forget Xbox One or PS4, Nintendo 3DS is king of hardware sales for December

While most in the industry are infatuated with comparing the sales of Microsoft's Xbox One and Sony's PS4, there's another system quietly beating them both — the Nintendo 3DS.

According to NPD Group's latest report, Nintendo's 3DS was the overall best-selling hardware for December 2013, and for 2013 as a whole, in the United States. However, due to the Xbox One's $499.99 price point, Microsoft's system actually led annual hardware sales on a dollars basis.

Even the Nintendo Wii U enjoyed some success in December. The stuggling home console recorded its best month yet. “Hardware sales of the Wii U were also positive with December 2013 marking its highest month for unit sales month so far," NPD Group reported.

Overall, total video game sales for the United States in December were up slightly by 2 percent year-over-year, from $3.21 billion in 2012 to $3.28 billion in 2013. Hardware sales in Dececember 2013 were repotedly $1.37 billion, up 28 percent from the $1.07 billion in December 2012.
