This year will mark the 10 year anniversary of a generation-defining title: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. It’s been 8 years since the whole trilogy came to a close but it looks like the story may continue in 2019 with a Modern Warfare 4 if teases are to be believed.
While an official reveal is undoubtedly imminent given Activision has stated they’ll reveal Call of Duty 2019 by June 30th (but likely before given E3 is mid-June), trusted sources are eagerly teasing the new entry in the acclaimed FPS series. Infinity Ward’s community manager during the Modern Warfare trilogy, Robert Bowling, took to Twitter in the wee hours of the night to post some very ominous videos.
Both videos focus heavily on the popular and beloved Modern Warfare 2 character, Ghost, who was shot and then had his corpse burnt. Optimistic fans hoped the mysterious special ops soldier could return somehow but… given how brutal and unforgiving his death was, it seemed unlikely.
Now, maybe it isn’t as unlikely as we thought or the presumed Modern Warfare 4 will be a prequel set between MW1 and MW2 with Ghost as the protagonist. Both tweets from Bowling feature lyrics from the Nine Inch Nails song Hurt, famously covered by Johnny Cash. The first video also features that cover.
The heavy and moody lyrics could suggest many different things for the new game but it’s not totally clear what at this time. The second video showcases Ghosts’ death as a monologue from Captain Price is played talking about how powerful a lie can be, alluding back to the likes of Makarov and Shepard in MW2.
Bowling ended his teasing for the night with a picture of him at the MW3 reveal event but his shirt has the 3 of the game’s logo blacked out… for whatever reason.
Robert Bowling no longer works at Infinity Ward and hasn’t for years. He’s currently a creative consultant at EA but Infinity Ward has quietly been bringing back Modern Warfare veterans to work on the mystery title over the last year, notably talent from Respawn.
Respawn Entertainment was formed by a large number of developers and leads from Modern Warfare 2 so if Infinity Ward was able to lure them back, it must be quite promising.
As of right now, there’s no official news regarding what Call of Duty 2019 entails… but if history is anything to go by, we shouldn’t have to wait long to find out. A remaster of Modern Warfare 2 has leaked several times, including a recent listing by a ratings board.
