Former Wii U-exclusive Zombi(U) heading to PS4, Xbox One, and PC

Just in times for Gamescom next month, Ubisoft has announced that ZombiU, which debuted as a Wii U exclusive in 2012, is coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It'll release as a digital download on August 18, 2015, as Zombi — dropping the "U" because it's no longer a Wii U exclusive.

"After being one of the Wii U flagship titles in 2012, ZOMBI returns to challenge gamers on multiple new platforms to find out how long they can survive in the dilapidated, infected London. For the second time in history, a great plague has shrouded the city in a fog of death and thousands have died, or worse, been infected by a sickness more gruesome than death. Once again, this fear-fueled first-person shooter invites all players to dive into the horror, chaos and tension found in the best of the genre."

Zombi is being ported by Straight Right, and is said to have been "optimized" for current-gen systems, "using the power of the latest generation of hardware to bring gamers to a new level of horror."

ZombiU  offered players an innovative, intense experience when it first released. It featured a permadeath mechanic that, when you died, saw you return as a brand new character while your former self was brought back as a zombie. The idea that you could lose all of your items upon death created a true sense of survival-horror.

What'll be interesting to see is how Ubisoft handles another of the game's features which made use of the Wii U gamepad. When scavenging for items or picking a lock, you would do so on the Gamepad, while on screen you would be looking behind you to see approaching zombies. It's unclear how Zombi will handle that on current-gen systems.

Though the timing comes as a surprise, the actual announced has been rumored for quite a while now. The most obvious sign was ZombiU being rated on Xbox One.

Hopefully Zombi will be playable at Gamescom next month, where we'll be able to bring you our earlier impressions before it releases. In the meantime, check out the trailer above and the screenshots below.
