Four months later, Sony still can’t fully commit to Driveclub: PS Plus Edition

Sony's PlayStation 4 exclusive racing game Driveclub has been in the hands of the public for more than four months now. Supposed to be releasing alongside the full version of the game back in October 2014 was a free, slightly watered down version for PlayStation Plus members. As the story goes, though, and as you're probably well aware, launch issues — particularly with the online servers — prevented the release of the free PS Plus version.

Sony is still believed to be working on getting us the PS Plus version, but to this day, the game remains postponed "until further notice." And now, new doubts have been cast over the free PlayStation Plus version of Driveclub as Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president and CEO Jim Ryan was unable to answer the straightforward question: "Is there still going to be the free PlayStation Plus version?"

"That's still being looked at," Ryan told Metro. When pressed for further comment, he replied, "I can't say anything at this stage."

Now before we go sounding the panic alarm, it should be noted that Sony is a publicly traded company. The reason Ryan can't commit or say anything is likely because Sony's stock is at stake. Should he say something, it could disrupt the company's value. And should, for some reason, the company not meet the expectations he set forth, it would cause further harm. More than likely, Sony is working with Evolution to get the game out; but, understand Ryan is not in position to make that call. If you haven't realized it by now, there's a reason, far beyond marketing, that publicly traded game companies wait for specific times to announce things.

All we know for certain, right now, is that Driveclub PS Plus Edition is postponed indefinitely and that Evolution Studios is working to improve stability and performance, and upgrade the servers to "enable the release of the PS+ Edition."
