Fox is remaking Escape from New York

Fox won a bidding process to remake the 1981 cult classic Escape from New York, which was directed by John Carpenter.

Carpenter has directed other great movies like Assault on Precinct 13 (1976), Halloween, Big Trouble in Little China, and Escape from L.A. Carpenter will be serving as executive producer on the remake and will have creative influence over the project.

The 1981 original took place in a dystopian future, which was the year 1997. The crime-ridden United States converted Manhattan Island in New York City to a maximum security prison. When Air Force One crashes en route to a summit that could prevent World War III, ex-soldier and eyepatch-wearing Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) is given 22 hours to find and rescue the President of the United States.

As for who is going to play Snake, that's up in the air. There have been rumors of Chris Hemsworth or Charlie Hunnam, and I would mind either of them. I just hope they cast Russell in some way — maybe as the President?
