Fox targeting R-rating for Wolverine

Deadpool won't be the only Marvel superhero targeting an adult audience. According to a 20th Century Fox movie pamphlet reportedly handed out at Toy Fair 2016, the studio is now aiming for an R-rating for the third and final Wolverine film.

The pamphlet features the Wolverine 3 logo, theatrical and home entertainment release dates (March 3, 2017 and Summer 2017, respectively), and anticipated "R" MPAA rating.

Fox's apparent all-in on "adult" superhero films was recently predicted by Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn. In a post on Facebook yesterday, the director lambasted recent comments made by a Hollywood "suit" to Deadline, while predicting studios would misunderstand "the lesson they should be learning with Deadpool."

"They'll be green lighting films "like Deadpool" – but, by that, they won't mean "good and original" but "a raunchy superhero film" or "it breaks the fourth wall." They'll treat you like you're stupid, which is the one thing Deadpool didn't do," Gunn said.

"But hopefully in the midst of all this there will be a studio or two that will take the right lesson from this – like Fox did with Guardians by green-lighting Deadpool – and say – "Boy, maybe we can give them something they don't already have."'

I would like to think this sort of decision was made months prior to Deadpool's success rather than in kneejerk reaction to it. I'm hoping 20th Century Fox's reasoning for the R-rating has more to do with wanting to tell a more accurate representation of the Old Man Logan story and less to do with attempting to capitalize on the predictable and inevitable train of R-rated superhero films. On the plus side, fans who grew up watching the Wolverine films are at least old enough to see a potential R-rated film in theaters, so there's undoubtedly less risk involved with this than there was with Deadpool.

Wolverine 3, which will be Hugh Jackman's last time portraying the iconic X-Men character on the big screen, is set for release on March 3, 2017. How do you feel about the
