Developer Psyonix and publisher Square Enix today announced the cancellation of Nosgoth, their free-to-play Legacy of Kain spinoff.
“It is with a heavy heart and an immense sense of sadness that we must announce the end of Nosgoth’s development,” Square Enix said in an announcement. “Servers will continue to run until 31st May 2016, during which time you will be able to play the game as normal. After that date, Nosgoth will be taken offline for the last time.
“It was not an easy decision to come to,” the company added. “It has been a pleasure to build this game with your help, but ultimately its audience hasn’t grown enough to sustain ongoing operations.”
Players who purchased Nosgoth since March 1, 2016 will receive a refund in the coming weeks. All players, including refund recipients, will be able to access all of the game’s content until its impending shutdown. Additionally, the April Nosgoth Open Beta Cup will be conducted as planned, but will obviously be the game’s final tournament.
Square Enix said Nosgoth’s somber end will not affect the future of the Legacy of Kain franchise, and that future games will be judged “on the merits of the proposals alone.”
For the unaware: Nosgoth was an action game set in the Legacy of Kain universe. It pitted human and vampire teams against one another in a multiplayer action environment that blended traditional FPS combat with Battleborn-esque MOBA elements. Its development began in earnest in 2014.
