Funky bullet hell shooter Laser Disco Defenders coming to PS Vita

Boy, it's something

Laser Disco Defenders, a game described as a “groovy, procedural, twin-stick, laser-dodging, bullet hellish, disco-infused hodgepodge” by its creator, is here to prove that the Vita isn’t dead.

As one-man dev and superlative enthusiast Alexander Birke said on the PlayStation Blog, Laser Disco Defenders will launch exclusively on Vita later this year, bringing an eclectic bag of mechanics and features with it.

“The game is inspired by the science fiction and music of the late 70s,” Birke said. “After the success of Star Wars a supernova of cheap, hilarious knock offs came out and even disco music—the pulse of the decade—started to use space themes and sound effects.”

From that central theme stemmed a funky character creator, a psychedelic aesthetic and procedurally generated levels. Arguably most intriguing is the game’s bullet mechanic: your shots bounce off walls infinitely, so eventually you wind up dodging your own rounds in addition to enemies in your quest to save the galaxy from Lord Monotone.
