Reports are coming in that James Wan is taking the role of producer on the Mortal Kombat reboot that is being developed at New Line and Broken Road. Wan is the director behind Insidious, The Conjuring and Furious 7, so you could say he's in high demand.
The Mortal Kombat reboot was described the studio as “a departure from the mythology,” with “darker, brutally real martial arts.” The studio's description makes it seem as though the special abilities and humanoids like Reptile and D'Vorah won't have a place in the film, but the story (penned by Mortal Kombat: Legacy writer Oren Uziel and The Expendables writer Dave Callaham) claims otherwise.
Apparently, the film centers around a 'harmless' guy who realizes his potential for butt-kicking when he finds himself 'caught in the middle of a cross-dimensional battle between the warriors of Earth and the monsters of Outworld.' To save the world from total destruction, he must win the martial arts tournament known as ‘Mortal Kombat’.
Whether this reboot will truly be a 'departure from the mythology,' or not has yet to be seen. Meanwhile, James Wan is set to direct 2018's Aquaman!
