Futurama’s return as a mobile game was first revealed in November 2015, but we’ve only recently gotten a look at the game’s core design. Speaking to GameSpot, project leads Dave Grossman and Patric Verrone described Futurama: Game of Drones as an opportunity to continue the show’s iconic humor.
“Futurama has always used a lot of parody and satire,” Grossman said, “and we’re more than happy to have an opportunity to add more. The one peculiar additional goal we have that the writers of the TV show did not is to bring meaning to the play of the game, wrapping the mechanics up into the Futurama universe to connect everything together.”
“We’re hoping to make the story something that fans of Futurama will recognize and players who don’t know the show won’t break their thumbs trying to click past,” Verrone added.
Futurama: Game of Drones will be a fundamentally simple match-four puzzle game, yet the team behind it is targeting a more immersive experience than what’s typically expected of mobile development. The game will use multiple locations and characters from the show, major and minor, to help bring the game to life.
“Good news, everyone! In-jokes, characters and history from the TV show infest this game like a pack of owls,” Grossman noted.
