The Half-Life series will never be complete until Half-Life 3 releases — at least that's the popular opinion around the web. Not everyone shares that opinion though, some people think that it would be a "bad choice" to pursue in the series. In a podcast uploaded by Geoff Keighley , the co-founder of Valve shared his thoughts on a number of topics, one of which was Half-Life 3.
Gabe Newell has a couple things going for him: he's the co-founder of Valve, he owns 50% of Valve and has an Internet following that will like transcend time; eventually Newell will simply become the Internet. We have quite a bit of time before that happens, but let's be honest, Half-Life 3 will release after that event.
Don't get Newell wrong, he understands the love for the series:
"I get it," he said. "I'm a fan of TV shows, I'm a fan of writers, I'm a fan of movies, I'm a fan of games. I certainly understand why people are like 'Hey, I remember this awesome experience and I'm starting to get worried that I'm never going to get to have it again.' "
In the podcast with Keighly, Newell carefully responded to gentle prodding on Half-Life 3. He didn't want to give any hints confirming or denying that the successor was coming:
"The only reason we'd go back and do like a super classic kind of product is if a whole bunch of people just internally at Valve said they wanted to do it and had a reasonable explanation for why [they did].
But you know if you want to do another Half-Life game and you want to ignore everything we've learned in shipping Portal 2 and in shipping all the updates on the multiplayer side, that seems like a bad choice. So we'll keep moving forward. But that doesn't necessarily always mean what people are worried that it might mean."
"It seems like a bad choice." That line is echoed in the sounds of thousands of hearts breaking.
