Galapagos: The RPG from Final Fantasy contributors you’ll never play

Japan doesn't love us.

OK, so Compile Heart doesn't love us, or at least the Japanese company isn't letting us in on its exclusive new role-playing game, code-named the Galapagos RPG. It's specifically designed for an East Asian audience, and it's one of first in a new label that keeps that market solely in mind.

The name refers to "Galapagos syndrome," or the isolation of a product to a particular region, according to Crunchyroll. Involved in the project are artist Yoshitaka Amano and composer Nobuo Uematsu (and his new band, the Earthbound Papas), who have worked on Final Fantasy games since the early years.

The Hyperdimension Neptunia team is developing the game.

This exclusivity comes as a blow to Western fans who have to clamor to get localizations of Japanese games at all. It sucks that Compile Heart has immediately removed Galapagos from the table.

At the same time, that kind of brand would appeal to Japanese players, whose style of games is under threat by the prevailing influence of Western design.

The teaser video doesn't show much, but you can watch it to see a hint of what we'll be missing.
