Remember in the Fall when the Gambit movie was finally back on track to start up again and filming was scheduled for March? Well, director Gore Verbinski left the project and it was taken off the production schedule, leaving it on pause yet again, according to Omega Underground.
The X-Men solo movie was set to start filming in New Orleans, then move to Montreal, Quebec for the bulk of the film. The departure of Verbinksi, previous director of Pirates of the Caribbean, was a nonconfrontational one, reportedly a result of scheduling issues.
Regardless of there being no ill will, this is the third time Gambit has had the rug pulled out from under them. It has lost three directors in its time, including Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity). Despite all of the jumping ship, producer Channing Tatum remains on the project as a big fan of the character.
The plot of Gambit sounds like one worth fighting for. It has Gambit, complete with the ability to supercharge kinetic energy, attempting to unite two factions of the Thieves Guild, which raised him like family. It was said to be a mix of Ocean’s Eleven and Romeo & Juliet, but with mutants.
