‘Game Developer’ Barbie coming this summer

Big things are happening with Barbie this year, and part of that evolution includes products that "feature more empowering and imaginative roles." As part of  Barbie's "#YouCanBeAnything" movement, the company will release a "Game Developer Career of the Year" Barbie this summer.

Only a single image of the "Game Developer" Barbie was posted to the site. It features a Hipster Ariel-looking doll complete with headphones and a laptop — everything a successful game developer needs.

Despite the most stereotypical approach to the design, it's actually refreshing to see Barbie encourage girls to explore the field of game development, an industry often dominated by men. Whether or not "Game Developer" Barbie will actually encourage more girls to participate in the industry remains to be seen, but at least it shows girls that it's okay to be interested in something that has long been considered a "boys only" club.

Game Development Barbie is just one part of Barbie's evolution. Today the company announced an expanded doll line that adds three new body types — tall, curvy and petite — and a variety of skin tones, hair styles, and outfits. The new Barbie 2016 Fashionistas line will now offer a total of four body types (when including the original), seven skin tones, 22 eye colors, 24 hairstyles and countless fashions and accessories to better diversify the brand.

“Barbie has always given girls choices – from her 180 careers, to inspirational roles, to her countless fashions and accessories,” said Evelyn Mazzocco, Senior Vice President and Global General Manager Barbie. “We are excited to literally be changing the face of the brand – these new dolls represent a line that is more reflective of the world girls see around them – the variety in body type, skin tones and style allows girls to find a doll that speaks to them.”
