The penultimate season of Game of Thrones has wrapped up, and as we settle in for what is likely an extended wait for the end of the series (potentially airing as late as 2019), the numbers on the Season 7 finale are rolling in and they are gaudy. As revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, Game of Thrones' Season 7 finale managed to pull in 16.5 million viewers which consist of only live tune-ins and same night streams.
The final tally is likely to be at least double that, as the season has averaged 31 million viewers an episode after factoring in all live, time-shifted, on-demand and streaming tallies. The finale also was a 13% increase over from the season's previous high set two weeks ago, and a 36% increase over the Season 6 finale. It's no wonder that HBO is looking to continue the series with a spinoff.
Game of Thrones' seventh season was the first to run a season of fewer than ten episodes, and Season 8 is projected to be even shorter at six. For HBO, they'll have to get by for the next year or so without what is undoubtedly the biggest show on TV, but somehow I imagine they'll be just fine.
