Gamescom 2016: Konami reveals Metal Gear Solid V zombie spin-off titled Metal Gear Survive

Everyone loves zombies I guess...

In what is probably the most unexpected announcement from Gamescom (so far), Konami announced a brand new Metal Gear game! But it's not what you think… seriously you'll never guess what it is in a million years.

It's a co-op zombie survival game titled Metal Gear Survive (the 'V' in survive is supposed to be the 'V' in Metal Gear Solid V)! IGN exclusively revealed the game and gave some details about the game. The game takes place directly after the ending of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, the precursor to The Phantom Pain, and sends survivors of the wrecked Mother Base through a wormhole to an alternate dimension. Players will have to defend themselves against zombies and even a Metal Gear

“Metal Gear Survive will offer a fresh take on the series’ famed stealth elements,” said Konami European president, Tomotada Tashiro in a press release, “but within a unique co-op setting that is designed for a truly engrossing multiplayer experience.”

Little else is known about the game so you'll have to dissect the trailer for as many details as you can. It does appear however you will be relying on new survival mechanics like picking up pieces of the Mother Base wreckage that got sucked through the wormhole with you to build weapons and other equipment.

Metal Gear Survive will be the first Metal Gear title since Kojima's departure in 2015 but the title will still use the FOX engine used in The Phantom Pain and Ground Zeroes. It's safe to say the game will still feel familiar but will add new additions to make it feel like a fresh experience, similar to Sniper Elite's Zombie Army spin-off.

Neither a price point or specific release date have been given for the spin-off and it's unclear whether you'll need Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain to play the game.

Earlier this week, a Metal Gear Solid V: Definitive Experience was listed on Amazon and mentioned that it'll bundle both Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and Ground Zeroes into one complete package. Konami has yet to confirm the bundle but it's likely we will hear more of it soon.

Metal Gear Survive is set to release sometime in 2017 on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
