GameStick gets funded in just 30 hours, XBMC and DNLA support announced

Apparently there's room for more than one Android-based home console. Not long after the OUYA sparked a Kickstarter frenzy, PlayJam introduced the GameStick, described as the most portable TV game console. The portable console consists of just a stick with an HDMI sticking out and a small controller — the GameStick is so small that it actually fits inside of it's own controller. But would it succeed in getting funded or were people content with the OUYA?

As it turns out, the consumer response to the GameStick has been overwhelming and the device was funded in just 30 hours. Over 1,000 Kickstarter backers helped PlayJam surpass their $100,000 funding goal.

“The response from the Kickstarter community has been truly overwhelming. We are confident in our product and what we hope it will mean for gaming but we were taken aback at how quickly the message was adopted,” said Anthony Johnson, CMO, PlayJam.“There is no better feeling than having hundreds if not thousands of people endorse your idea.”

The team has currently been busy answering questions and requests through the Kickstarter message board. Today, they announced support for XBMC and DNLA.

“While we are shipping as a dedicated games console, we are keen to ensure that users have the ability to hack the device if they so wish and will be providing support for XBMC & DNLA via an optional firmware update in September. We encourage users to hack the device – the time for closed, proprietary systems is ending which bodes well for true innovation”, concluded Johnson.

The GameStick is expected to launch in April of this year. It's not too late to support the GameStick. Although the "Early Bird" pledge tier is sold out, you can still purchase a GameStick for $79. Check out the official Kickstarter pager for more details.
