GameStop, closed on Thanksgiving, will open at midnight on Black Friday

As you may be aware of by now, video game retailer GameStop is joining a handful of other stores in waiting until "Black Friday" to open for the mega holiday deals. GameStop, along with other retailers like Costco and Homegoods, will not be open at all on Thanksgiving, I confirmed with the company today.

But while their doors will remain closed on Thursday, November 27, they aren't waiting too long to reopen them. The Black Friday shopping will begin at 12:01 am on Friday, November 28, I was told.

In the past, retailers have been challenging each other to open earlier and earlier, with some last year going as far as opening around 6:00pm on the holiday. While it's nice to see retailers finally stand against that type of business decision, I'm not so sure opening at midnight on the Friday after is much of an improvement. Sure, you at least get time to eat with your family, but then you've still got to go into work that night, cutting the evening short.

If employees are willing to go into work, and not being forced by their managers or bosses, then I'm all for it. The extra holiday pay (which they should be getting) could go a long way for those struggling in this economy. And if consumers are willing to brave the mad rush, then retailers should continue to open early. I've certainly gone out at midnight on Black Friday; In a weird way, I actually find it strengthens the family bond. I've got some great memories of going out with friends and family to fight the holiday rush.
