GameStop hiring 17,000 employees for Xbox One and PS4 holiday push

The world's largest multichannel video game retailer is about to get larger.

There's no doubt November is going to be a huge month for the gaming industry. With both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 set to launch that month, retailers are preparing for what many hope will be an onslaught of customers and sales. One retailer in particular, GameStop, is gearing up for the holiday push with plans to hire approximately 17,000 employees nationwide.

Actual positions available include in-store Game Advisros, consumer electronic technicians within its refurbishment operation center (ROC), and warehouse personnel within the company’s two distribution centers. Despite what appears to be a large influx of hires, GameStop notes that this year's total number of seasons hires is actually in line with the number of hires made during the same period in 2012. As you'd expect with most retailers, the week leading up to the holidays usually result in a substantial peak in the number of customers. Add in the fact that this year two new systems are launching and it's easy to understand why GameStop is expecting huge numbers.

“Providing our customers a great experience is of paramount importance when it comes to defining who GameStop is as a retailer and delivering the total value we offer our customers,” said Mike Buskey, Senior Vice President of Human Resources at GameStop. “The holiday season is our busiest time of the year, accounting for approximately 40% of our annual revenue. As we near the 2013 holiday season, and the upcoming launches of the PS4 and Xbox One consoles, it is critical that we attract and retain high quality-talent both in our stores as well as in our consumer electronics refurbishment and distribution centers.”

According to GameStop, season jobs offer employees part-time, flexible work schedules during the week, weeknights and weekends. Let's also not forget the 15 percent discount off select merchandise. It sure would my holidays more affordable.
