Gearbox begins work on Mechromancer as Borderlands 2 heads to certification

Gearbox announced today that its upcoming co-op shooter RPG Borderlands 2 is completely finished and headed to certification for testing before its release on September 18th.

Since Gearbox can no longer make changes to the final game, they announced their shift towards "post-launch efforts", most notably the Mechromancer class which will arrive as free downloadable content to members of the Borderlands 2 Premiere Club.

Revealed at PAX East in April, the Mechromancer is a fifth playable class in Borderlands 2. Initial previews showcased a young cyborg girl who can control a large mechanized robot known as D374-TP, or "Deathtrap". At the time, they said they wouldn't begin developing the new character until they finished work on the entire Borderlands 2 game.

Now that it's completed, Gearbox will start work on the Mechromancer in order to get her ready for her "post-launch" release. Gearbox estimates the Mechromancer will arrive "roughly 60 to 90 days after launch".

As stated before, the Mechromancer is just one of the many bonuses for members of the Premiere Club, which can be joined by simply pre-ordering Borderlands 2 before its release on September 18 in North America and September 21 Internationally. It's that easy!

Premiere Club members will also receive the Vault Hunter's Relic which boosts gear-hunting fortune, a Golden Key to unlock a rare item in the mysterious Sanctuary Loot Chest, a package of unique Gearbox Golden Guns to help you start your journey on Pandora – all for free! You can check out the Borderlands 2 FAQ for more details about Premiere Club benefits.
