George Lucas thinks Star Wars: The Last Jedi is “beautifully made”

Star Wars: The Last Jedi just released and it has received critical acclaim, but that doesn’t exactly mean everyone loves it. There are a number of vocal fans on social media hating on the film for its shift away from the “norm” when it comes to the franchise. Some believe it ruins fan-favorite characters, is a weak and lacking middle installment for the trilogy, and more. Fans went as far as giving the film a rotten audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes but that hasn’t damaged the film’s financial success.

One person who did seemingly love the film is series creator George Lucas. Lucas signed away the rights to Star Wars in 2012 and has since been uninvolved with the franchise aside from providing script treatments when he sold the rights and occasionally visiting the set of each film to see what they’re doing to his creation. Lucas recently got a screening of The Last Jedi and one of his reps said that Lucas felt the film was “beautifully made”.

The former Star Wars director also spoke to The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson and had nothing but nice things to say. It seems that he is happy that the series which was thrashed by fans and critics last time it was in his hands is being treated kindly and respectfully. Johnson’s film has taken notable risks (which we won’t get in here) and while they’re divisive, it’s probably nice for Lucas to see that Disney isn’t playing it safe with the films which were unconventional when they originally came on to the scene in the 70s and 80s.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is out now.
