If you've already pre-ordered Nintendo's shiny New 3DS hardware, and are currently a 3DS owner, and possibly dreading the upcoming system transfer process? Don't worry, Nintendo has you covered with a pretty in-depth video that goes over just what you need to do, especially considering that the New 3DS now uses MicroSD cards, instead of the standard SD cards.
The process, though containing a bunch of steps, is actually quite easy. Though you will need a PC as the intermediary to transfer all your game content, provided you have a lot of it.
Take a look.
However, there is a secondary way you can transfer all your games to the New 3DS, with an already existing MicroSD card. For example, this MicroSD card comes with an SD card adapter, turning that MicroSD into a standard sized SD card. You can then transfer the content from your current SD card to the MicroSD card in the adapter, and plug that back into your current 3DS. Once the New 3DS comes out, you can then continue to do the System Transfer process, except on Part 8 where it asks whether you're currently using an SD card or MiniSD card, choose No. That will allow you to take the MicroSD card from your old 3DS, out of the adapter, and then directly into the New 3DS, and you're good to go!
If you prefer to see it listed out, here you go.
- Purchase a large capacity MicroSD card with an adapter included. Like this, or this, or even this.
- Take your existing SD card out of your old 3DS, and transfer all the content to a folder on your computer.
- Put the new MicroSD card into the adapter, plug it into your computer, and transfer all the files from your computer to the MicroSD card.
- Now put the MicroSD card that's housed inside the adapter back into your old 3DS.
- Start a System Transfer on both 3DS consoles. Go through the process until it asks you this: Are you using an SD card or a Mini SD card with this system? At this point, select No.
- Continue the process until it asks you to remove the SD card from your old 3DS. At that point, take your MicroSD card and adapter out of your old 3DS. Remove the MicroSD card from the adapter, and insert it directly into the New 3DS.
- Voila, you're done! Your New 3DS should now have all your preferences, themes, and games carried over.
