Gillian Anderson is done with The X-Files after this season

The rule of thumb with everything associated with the business of entertainment seems to be that anything that was remotely popular at some point will come back. The same has been true for Fox’s revival of The X-Files, which had been dormant since 2002 until it was brought back in 2016.

In the midst of its second revival season (though technically it’s Season 11), Gillian Anderson, who has played Scully since the beginning appears to be at the end of the road with The X-Files. Speaking at the Television Critics Association winter press tour, the long-time actress confirmed that she is “finished” with the show after this season.

“It’s been an extraordinary character, but there’s lots of things to do and I don’t want to be tied down doing one thing,” she said (via Deadline). “But I’m serious. I’m finished.”

Anderson described the first revival season as “like learning to walk again” due to its short run (six episodes), and that the decision to expand Season 11 to ten is like being “up and running.”

Production on Season 11 hasn’t yet ended, though, for Anderson, her parts have already been filmed. It would be impossible to imagine The X-Files moving forward without Scully, though to be fair, the show attempted something similar during Season Eight when co-star David Duchovny quit being a full-time character on the show after filing a lawsuit against 20th Century Fox.

A twelfth season for The X-Files hasn’t yet been announced, though the network is probably waiting to see how viewership shakes out before making the commitment. The X-Files airs on Wednesdays on Fox at 8 PM Eastern.
