Good Old Games, the Web site that allowed gamers to purchase older PC titles like the original Fallout completely DRM free, has shut down.
“We have recently had to give serious thought to whether we could really keep GOG.com the way it is. We’ve debated on it for quite some time and, unfortunately, we’ve decided that GOG.com simply cannot remain in its current form,” the GOG.com team writes. “We’re very grateful for all support we’ve received from all of you in the past two years. Working on GOG.com was a great adventure for all of us and an unforgettable journey to the past, through the long and wonderful history of PC gaming.”
Not only did Good Old Games breathe new life into old games by optimizing them for current operating systems, they also included bonuses like soundtracks, and gave full customer support for the over 200 titles on its site.
It was a good idea that, unfortunately, proved to be unsustainable in its current form. However, the team at Good Old Games says this doesn’t mean that the idea behind GOG.com is gone forever.
They also say they are working on a technical solution that will allow those who bought games on the site to re-download their purchases, and will have updates on their Twitter and Facebook pages.
