Gotham Knights from WB Montreal revealed as co-op Batfamily game

After years of teases, leaks, and rumors, a new Batman game is finally upon us. Gotham Knights is the new title from WB Montreal and puts the Batfamily against the fabled Court of Owls.

Bruce Wayne is dead and the Batfamily is tasked with keeping Gotham safe. Robin, Batwoman, Red Hood, and Nightwing all team up to keep the streets safe. The combat looks to take cues from the Arkham franchise’s beloved gameplay but with new spins on it. There’s two player co-op (no 4 player), RPG-elements, and much more. You even get to explore Gotham on cool Bat-cycles, a la The Dark Knight.

“The team is thrilled to announce Gotham Knights and share our work in bringing a different story of the DC Super Heroes to the forefront,” said Patrick Redding, Creative Director, Warner Bros. Games Montréal. “We’re looking forward to fans playing and enjoying a lot of action as this new guard of strong DC Super Heroes in Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood and Robin, while solving an original mystery set against a living, breathing Gotham City.”

That mystery involves The Court of Owls. The Court of Owls are a newer addition to the Batman mythos. They first appeared via the DC Comics’ New 52 reboot back in 2011 and act as a mysterious, Illuminati-like group with assassins known as “Talons”. The group has long controlled Gotham City with use wealth and violence to keep their power.

Gotham Knights is the first standalone game for the Caped Crusader’s universe since 2015. That’s when Rocksteady released the finale to their acclaimed trilogy with Batman: Arkham Knight. The former Bat-dev is now working on a Suicide Squad game which was revealed earlier today.

This isn’t WB Montreal’s first at bat (no pun intended) with The Dark Knight. The studio developed Batman: Arkham Origins in 2013 which is a prequel to the trilogy, following a younger, more inexperienced Bruce Wayne.

Gotham Knights will release in 2021 on current-gen consoles as well as PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
