There's really no doubt in anyone's minds that Rockstar holds the most valuable IP in gaming history. Grand Theft Auto is an absolute juggernaut and whenever a new one releases, publishers stay out of Rockstar's way because they know their game will be annihilated.
Even nearly four years later, Grand Theft Auto V is still topping the NPD each month and just recently sold over 75 million copies. Yes, one game sold 75 million copies and it is still selling. Although it didn't have the same booming success of V, Grand Theft Auto IV was one of the best-selling (and most critically acclaimed) games of the Xbox 360/PS3 generation.
It only makes sense that when the sense that if a game like Grand Theft Auto IV came back, it would be very successful! Well, that's exactly what happened. After going backward compatible for Xbox One on Thursday, Grand Theft Auto IV saw an extreme spike in sales. The game's sales increased by over 8000% on Amazon alone while the Grand Theft Auto IV complete edition that bundles together the main game and both expansions saw an increase of roughly 4500%! It's pretty incredible.
This isn't the first time this has happened, Rockstar's other major IP, Red Dead Redemption, saw a large spike in sales last summer when it went backward compatible. It's probably a safe bet to assume that we will see a lot of, if not all, of Rockstar's games go backward compatible on Xbox One due to how much money they pull in.
Rockstar's next game will be Red Dead Redemption 2 which will release this fall on Xbox One and PS4.
