It's been 31 years since the original Gremlins released in 1984 (I was 5 years old, wow) and 25 since Gremlins 2 The New Batch in 1990. Recent rumors of a reboot have of course floated around for a while with other films being remade, The Muppets coming back, etc but that's not always a good thing. As I always say, like Oreos over Hydrox and Cheez-its over Cheese Nips, somethings just shouldn't change.
It seems like Zach Galligan feels the same away about Gremlins as well. In a recent interview with the BBC, Zach, who played Billy in Gremlins and was Gizmo's "Dad", addressed the rumors.
“It’s not going to be a reboot. It will not be a remake in any way, shape, or form. Chris Columbus has come out and said that the first film is very near and dear to his heart and as long as he is alive it will never be remade. So the only thing they will be – and apparently are going to be – doing is something along the lines of like Jurassic World, where it will be 30 years later.”
Now, Chris Colombus was the Co-Producer on Gremlins with Steven Spielburg of course and it's a good thing that they are shooting for Gremlins 3 over a reboot. One thing is that Zach himself is unsure if he will even be in the movie (Come on, how can't he be?). When he was asked, Galligan replied by saying “I swear on my life, I don’t know if I’m in it or not, but I think there is probably a decent chance since I’m one of the few people left standing from the first movie.”
Now, I'm sure Phoebe Cates and Corey Feldman would have something to say about that last comment. I mean, after all is there an 80's movie they WEREN'T in? You have to bring them back. Judge Reinhold too, even if just for cameos. We'll have to see when we hear more but Gremlins 3 is currently in development
