I have to really applaud Tom Cruise on his recent choice of film roles. Jack Reacher was surprisingly good. Oblivion was really underrated and one of the better movies of his career in my opinion. And now we have Edge of Tomorrow.
Ignore the fact that the name of the movie sounds like the titular track of a U2 album, Edge of Tomorrow has a melancholy tone, gritty action, and a time loop paradox to make this one heck of a sci-fi action film. The film stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, with Doug Liman of The Bourne Identity and Mr. & Mrs. Smith directing.
The official synopsis for Edge of Tomorrow is:
The epic action of "Edge of Tomorrow" unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world.
Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again.
But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.
Watch the trailer and try not to stare in awe and think "damn this movie is gonna be awesome."
Edge of Tomorrow will be in theaters on June 6, 2014.
