Grand Theft Auto 5's overwhelmingly positive reviews are translating into very successful sales for Take-Two Interactive. The publisher of the highly anticipated game, developed by Rockstar Games, announced today that first day sales for GTA 5 have topped $800 million worldwide. Not only is this the best selling title in the Grand Theft Auto series, but the highest first day retail sales of any title in Take-Two's history.
"All of us at Take-Two are thrilled with the initial response to Grand Theft Auto V. Once again, the team at Rockstar Games have outdone themselves, setting the entertainment industry's new standard for creativity, innovation and excellence," said Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick. "We are incredibly proud of Rockstar Games’ creative achievement and could not be more pleased with the success of this launch.”
Comparatively, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 — the fastest game to reach $1 billion in sales — had first-day earnings of over $500 million. Should sales continue at this torrid pace, GTA 5 has a legitimate shot at breaking that record.
