Guillermo del Toro will ‘never again get involved in video games’

Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is known for creating both action packed films and haunting films like Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy, and Pacific Rim. Unfortunately when it comes to gaming, he isn't as successful. The games don't even make it to launch, the most recent example of this would be the P.T. demo for Silent Hills.

P.T. was (and still is) wildly popular, so popular that when the game it was really revealed to be, Silent Hills, was cancelled before it even lifted off, fans were furious. It could have been the best horror game in the last 10 years. Because of his failures in gaming, Guillermo has taken a somewhat somber and ultra dramatic stance on his collaboration in video games.

"I have proven to be the albatross of video games," Guillermo said to ShackNews. "I joined THQ, and THQ goes broke. I join Kojima, and Kojima leaves Konami. I have decided, in order not to destroy anyone else's life, I will never again get involved in video games. Otherwise, I'll join someone and his house will explode, or something."

It's easy to see how he could see himself as the 'albatross of video games' (he could have just said burden, but this was more dramatic), Guillermo's last few attempts at working on games have exploded in his face (and the face of everyone around him). Guillermo and Kojima built a friendship off of the game that never was, but he still won't be making another game.

"Then I went to the side of Kojima, because he's a master, and I can gladly say that we are friends and I love his work and I will continue learning from him as a friend," he said. "But I am not… if I join another video game, World War III will start."

He said it in such a way that sounded like a joke, but he seemed to really mean it. That means that whatever project he and Kojima were working on was probably a film.

It's unfortunate to see Guillermo make such a statement – it would be great to see him contradict himself and make games again. Specifically speaking, it would be great if Guillermo and Kojima bunked up for one final go at Silent Hills.
