Sony Online Entertainment senior 3D artist Ryan Zimmerman last week took to the H1Z1 blog to shed light on his responsibility for the upcoming post-apocalyptic, zombie-survival MMO. Basically, he's responsible for character wearables and building the assets that clothe and accessorize your character.
"I make backpacks, hats, shirts, and more," he explained. "Essentially, I am tasked with ensuring that you aren’t running frantically through H1Z1…naked."
While the focus of the blog post was on the modeling and texture process for wearables in H1Z1, Zimmerman actually gave us a sneak peek at a few of the items you'll come across. He showed off a variant of one of H1Z1's backpacks, explaining "It's not pretty and it doesn't hold much but it can be a life saver until you find one that does."
He also gave an example (the hats) of how SOE models one asset and then uses different texture variants to create multiple versions while still keeping the memory overhead low. One of the game's many motorcycle racing helmets was also shared, as well as the basic ballistics helmet that will help mitigate damage taken.
"Thanks to our wearables team, you won’t be naked, but you certainly will be afraid," Zimmerman promised.
