Sony Online Entertainment still plans to bring its post-apocalyptic, survival MMO, H1Z1, to PlayStation 4, but for now the developer is focused on launching the game for PC first.
Earlier this week, SOE announced that H1Z1 will enter early access through Steam (on PC) on January 15, 2015. Although the announcement didn't mention the PS4 version, the early access FAQ page included a little tidbit of info on the console version.
"Yes, H1Z1 will be available on the PlayStation 4 but we don't have a specific timeframe to share at this moment," SOE said. "We are excited about the PlayStation 4 and the opportunities it presents, but we are currently focused on launching H1Z1 on Steam Early Access for the PC."
The statement echoes what SOE president John Smedley told us about the PS4 version's release back at SOE Live in August.
“It's PC first, only because we haven't started on the PS4 version,” Smedley told us at the time. “The PlanetSide 2 engine, the version of Forgelight, and H1Z1 are identical. So the reason we're waiting is that H1Z1 — 80 percent of the works is going to be done by launching PlanetSide 2 because all of the PlayStation 4 specific stuff will have been taken care of with the engine. Porting H1Z1 over after that will take a few months.”
PlanetSide 2 isn't yet out on PlayStation 4, but SOE confirmed to us over the weekend that they will be submitting a beta build this month. If all goes well, we could get a PlanetSide 2 closed beta in late December or sometime in January 2015.
