17 years ago, the first public version of the Sven Co-op mod, a cooperative game based on the original Half-Life, was made available. This Friday, it'll be released as a standalone title on Steam.
Sven Co-op will be released for free with with "hundreds" of features, fixes and improvements. There's also new maps and content, including the original Half-Life campaign, playable cooperatively (even by those who don't own the orginal game), which has been reworked for version 5.0. "New features have allowed the co-op version of the storyline maps to be reworked in a way that stays true to the original game while remaining challenging for multiple players," the developer said. Additionally, all donors past and present will get to keep their features in the Steam version.
Valve provided the mod's developers with a Goldsrc license, which has allowed the team to update the engine itself, allowing Sven Co-op and its maps to surpass the limitations of standard mods.
Sven Co-op will allow for easy isntallation and frequent iterative updates, with eventual plans for Steam Workshop support.
