Halo 5: Guardians to require Xbox Live Gold for campaign co-op

In a previous statement, 343 Industries studio head John Holmes revealed that Halo 5: Guardians would not require player to have Xbox Live Gold subscriptions to play online co-op. It turns out that players will need an Xbox Live Gold subscription to play online co-op.

Holmes released a statement on the Halo Waypoint blog looking to apologize for his mistake and to clarify whether or not Xbox Live Gold is required for the co-op campaign.

"I misspoke during the interview when stating that online co-op campaign would be supported with an Xbox Live Silver account," said Holmes. "Co-op campaign will require Xbox Live Gold to play. I want to extend my sincere apologies to our fans, and to Game Informer, for this error and any confusion it has caused."

The initial statement was made during Game Informer's July issue reveal. The statement was met with excitement from the Halo community, but no subscription fee for playing campaign with friends seemed to good to be true — and turns out it was. The information on campaign co-op might have been slightly skewed, but let's hope everything we heard about multiplayer is true (like the amount of maps and most importantly free maps).
