Microsoft's Halo franchise hit another milestone today, surpassing the 50 million sales mark. The series, which has been around since 2001, has seen the release of eight games to date. These include Halo: Combat Evolved (2001), Halo 2 (2004), Halo 3 (2007), Halo Wars (March 2009), Halo 3: ODST (September 2009), Halo: Reach (September 2010), Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary (2011), and Halo 4 (2012).
The Halo series was originally created by Bungie Studios, though the developer has since moved on to an all-new project code named Destiny. Halo: Combat Evolved was released as a launch title for the original Xbox console, but it's popularity led to it becoming a flagship title for Microsoft. Today, the Halo games are a staple in Microsoft's plans for the Xbox 360 and beyond.
Microsoft's newly created 343 Industries is now responsible for all things Halo. A month ago they led the launch of Halo 4 which has received glowing reviews, resulting in day-one sales of over $220 million. 343 Industries is currently working on future installments of the series, presumably Halo 5 and Halo 6.
Halo's long-term success is a testament to the hard work by all involved in the popular franchise. We look forward to many more years filled with the adventures of Master Chief.
