Happy Wars was the Xbox 360's first ever free-to-play title back in 2012, something that was a rarity for consoles as mobile games were growing in legitimacy. Now developer Toylogic is back at it with Happy Dungeons, a co-op dungeon crawler that will once again use the free-to-play model and retains much of the same formula that made Happy Wars so successful.
This time, the game is in the Xbox One Game Preview program and will allow players to give feedback on the game directly to the developers. Toylogic's President and Executive Director, Yoichi Take said:
"Happy Wars was played by millions of people and remains popular even today proving that even hardcore game genres can be appealing to all manner of players with the right blend of excitement, fun and accessibility…We’ve spent the last three years improving on that formula with Happy Dungeons. Our single priority is to challenge ourselves as creators technically and in the pure spirit of fun. We hope players will see that reflected in Happy Dungeons."
Players who partake in Happy Dungeons will be able to unlock unique in-game rewards, such as exclusive items and weapons that will carry over to the final game. The Game Preview build of Happy Dungeons currently consists of 6 story chapters, 30 dungeons, 3 character classes (Warrior, Mage, Cleric), multiple enemy races, 45 different customizable skills, and more than 600 unique items. In other words, there's a lot to do here for no cost at all.
It's also worth noting that Happy Dungeons comes with 4 player co-op that is both online and local, so you can gather friends either way for some dungeon crawling fun.
