HBO agrees to stream shows through Amazon Instant Video, but not Game of Thrones

PlayStation 4 and Xbox Own owners will soon be able to stream HBO shows directly through their systems, provided they are already Amazon Prime members. That's because Amazon and HBO have signed an extensive, multi-year agreement that will see many of HBO's shows available to watch via Amazon Prime Instant Video.

Shows like The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, and The Wire are all going to be included, as are the "early" seasons of Boardwalk Empire and True Blood. Mini-series like Band of Brothers and John Adams will also be made available. Newer shows like Girls and The Newsroom will also eventually be available to stream, but not until "approximately" three years after first airing on HBO. Unfortunately, there's no mention of Game of Thrones leading us to believe that HBO may be holding back some of the more in-demand content behind its own paywall.

The first wave of HBO content is set to arrive on Prime Instant Video on May 21st. Here's what Amazon Prime members will have access to:

  • All seasons of revered classics such as The Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood, Rome and Six Feet Under, and of recent favorites such as Eastbound & Down, Enlightened and Flight of the Conchords
  • Epic miniseries, including Angels in America, Band of Brothers, John Adams, The Pacific and Parade’s End
  • Select seasons of current series such as Boardwalk Empire, Treme and True Blood
  • Hit original movies like Game Change, Too Big To Fail and You Don’t Know Jack
  • Pedigreed documentaries including the Autopsy and Iceman series, Ghosts of Abu Ghraib and When the Levees Broke
  • Hilarious original comedy specials from Lewis Black, Ellen DeGeneres, Louis CK and Bill Maher

The two companies also announced that HBO GO, the premium channel's mobile streaming solution, is also coming to the newly released Amazon Fire TV set-top box, but that won't arrive until the end of 2014.
