HBO Boss clarifies that only one prequel show will actually get made; Final Season could get pushed to 2019

It seems as though people have gotten the wrong impression when it was said that five prequel shows for HBO's mega-drama, Game of Thrones were being written. "Being written" does not equal "getting made" as George R.R. Martin has previously stated on his personal blog, and now HBO's programming president Casey Bloys is stepping in to back that up. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bloys talks about the process of the prequels, Season 7, and when we might expect the final season to air.

He started by talking about the miscommunication regarding the prequels, saying "I wanted to make sure fans know this is a really embryonic process. I haven’t even seen outlines. In the press at large, everybody said, ‘there are four spinoffs’ and they assume that means each one is happening and we’re going to have a new Game of Thrones show per quarter."

He continued:

The idea is not to do four shows. The bar set by [Benioff and Weiss] is so high that my hope is to get one show that lives up to it.

Bloys also confirms that the series' current showrunners, D.B. Weiss and David Benioff will not be a part of the process on the prequel series, and will instead be working on the final season of Game of Thrones for the next year and a half. Also, when asked, Bloys confirmed that Season 8 had the potential to air in 2019, depending on when Weiss and Benioff write the episodes and figure out the production schedule.

In wrapping up the interview, Bloys described Season 7's premier as "amazing, " and he couldn't "imagine anybody being disappointed."

Game of Thrones Season 7 debuts this summer on July 16th, 2017.
