HBO is having ‘preliminary ongoing talks’ with George R.R. Martin for Game of Thrones prequel series

Robert's Rebellion perhaps?

There's no point in fretting over anything ending these days. Games, movies, TV; it doesn't matter. If it makes money, chances are pretty good that it will stick around in some form or another. While we know that Game of Thrones, as we know it will be ending in 2018 with Season 8, but HBO is very much open to the idea of continuing the brand as a prequel series according to EW

Casey Bloys, the programming president for HBO, told EW that the network is currently engaging in some early dialog with Game of Thrones' creator, George R.R. Martin about ideas for a follow-up series.

Bloys said:

"I would say it’s still kind of preliminary ongoing talks. There are areas we are exploring, but I wouldn’t point to any one and say, 'This is what we’re going to do.'"

Bloys was also asked if there was a confirmed count for the final number of episodes for Season 8, but he only replied, "I’ll take as much as we can get."

HBO's sentiments are understandable. Game of Thrones is far and away their biggest money maker and is the sole reason why their online service HBO GO is as big a hit as it is. Suffice it to say, when Game of Thrones goes, so too will all of those GO subscriptions. Therefore, it's easy to see why the network is getting a head start on looking to the future post-2018.
