Update: The headset is currently available for pre-order, price and incentives revealed.
With the Oculus Rift pre-orders set to go live later today, you might want to plan ahead and see if your computer can handle the headset. According to Oculus, Rift capable machines should have at least 8GB of RAM, an NVIDIA GTX 970 video card (or equivalent) and have around three 3.0 USB ports, plus one 2.0 port.
The only real change since the original specification is the need for more USB outputs.
Check out the specifications below:
Video Card: NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD 290 equivalent or greater
CPU: Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
Memory: 8GB+ RAM
Video OutputĀ Compatible: HDMI 1.3 video output
USB Ports: 3x USB 3.0 ports plus 1x USB 2.0 port
OS: Windows 7 SP1 64 bit or newer
If your PC doesn't meet Rift standards you can always check out a pre-fabricated PC from a number of retailers that meet Oculus' specifications. The Asus machines starting at $949, Dell's start at $999 and Alienware's X51 rigĀ starts at around $999.
Oculus creator, Palmer Luckey, recently restated that the company would 'keep their promises' regarding the $1,500 price of a Rift bundled with a headset compatible PC. Looking at the prices for the pre-fab machines, we can say the Rift will be somewhere around $500 to $600 (unless the 'bundles' come at a discounted price).
When Rift pre-orders go live, there will more than likely be special deals for the PCs so keep your eyes peeled for more information.
