Thanks to deal between Activision and Sony, Microsoft apparently isn't allowed to officially advertise for Destiny, despite the game also releasing for Xbox One and Xbox 360. But rather than just sitting back and letting Sony hog all the spotlight for what is arguably one of the biggest games of 2014, Microsoft thought of a very clever way to workaround these restrictions.
I introduce to you Destiny, the "new fragrance by Xbox."
See what they did there? In case you don't quite get it, here's Microsoft's explanation.
Destiny is actually an epic new first-person shooter, available on Xbox. Thing is, we didn’t have permission to run adverts for the game.
So we didn’t.
Thanks for smelling that something was up.
Now get the game and become a legend.
Well played Microsoft, well played. Some call it "mocking" the exclusiveness Sony has with Activision; I just think it's smart marketing. No different than what Sony did when they poked fun at the Xbox One's original inability to play used games. If anything, it's taking more of a shot at Activision. Either way, I love to see one gaming heavyweight go after another. Video game drama! At the end of the day, Destiny is going to sell incredibly well on both platforms, so does it really matter? The execs will be poppin' that champagne in just a few days.
And while I've got you here, check out the latest live action trailer for Destiny. It's got a certain Guardians of the Galaxy-like charm to it.
