Don't know if you know this, but Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a pretty big deal. Just released this week, the highly anticipated film is already breaking all sorts of records. But despite introducing an entirely new cast of characters for a new generation, there's one actor from the original trilogy that is said to have been indispensable — Harrison Ford, better known around the galaxy as Han Solo. As reported by Daily Mail, Ford was said to be absolutely crucial to The Force Awakens, and now we know how much Disney was willing to pay him for his efforts.
According to the report, the 73-year-old legend stands to make rougly $34 million dollars with The Force Awakens. This is a significant upgrade from the amount Ford made when he first played Han Solo back in 1977. Ford is said to have made just $10,500 dollars. The $34 million isn't just a straight shot deal, but rather a combination of an upfront payment with incentives based on the film's performance. Disney producers agreed to pay Ford $25 million dollars up front with a deal that also pays Ford 0.5 percent share of the film’s gross earnings. At the moment, it is expected to make at least 1.9 billion dollars, which could mean Ford earning an extra $9.6 million dollars.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens needed to have Han Solo so badly that one Disney source said:
“Harrison is the key to making this movie work. He’s the link between the old generation and the new. Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher were good to get, but the film could have lived without them. You couldn’t make it without Harrison Ford.”
Ford's salary is claimed to be more than 76 times greater than that of Daisy Ridley (Rey) and John Boyega (Finn). Both newcomers are said to have each received about $450,000 each for their roles. Seems like a pretty good deal for Disney, if you ask me — especially considering how well-received both actors have been for their respective parts. The report claims that both actors could receive an additional small cut of the film's revenues once worldwide box offing takings exceed the $1 billion mark.
Possible light spoilers regarding Daisy Ridley (Rey).
Additionally, while Ridley was relatively unknown before the film, her contract calls for a raise with subsequent installments. According to one insider:
“[Ridley] has been signed to a multi-picture deal with pre-set bumps in her salary that rise substantially with each movie. That doesn’t guarantee she’ll be in subsequent films, but it gives the studio peace of mind to know she’s contractually obliged if they want her again.”
Given Ridley's performance in the film, I'd say it's safe to expect her back.
As for director J.J. Abrams, he reportedly made $4.9 million on the film.
And lastly, Carrie Fisher — Princess-turned-General Leia — made roughly $1.5 million for the few scenes she is in.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been out for a little while now, I would definitely suggest looking into the spoiler free google chrome browser as there are many trolls on the internet looking to spoil the movie.
