Here’s how they get the gross Mortal Kombat X Fatality sounds

The most intense part of Mortal Kombat are the sounds that come out of a Fatality. The Fatality itself is visually graphic, but the images are absolutely nothing without the sounds: gurgling, squashing, slicing, punching, eye gauging and more.

Since ripping real hearts out of people for audio in a video is looked down upon, lot of fruit and vegetables go into making the sounds. Sound designers at NetherRealm are masters of layering the sounds that come from slicing papaya, the squash from something and the pulling attack of a watermelon.

One of the favorite methods to retrieve sounds for Mortal Kombat X was to cutting a hole in the top of a watermelon, thrusting a hand into it and pulling the hand out. Green peppers, celery breaking sticks and the sound of crushing nuts were used for for the crunch of bones.

Ermac's Fatality's were made with the slopping of slime in a bucket. At times a toilet plunger was used, in fact, a lot of times the toilet plunger was used.

There are some…flatulent sounds from the slime.
