Naughty Dog saw a lot of success with the downloadable content for The Last of Us, at least when it comes to the single-player DLC like Left Behind. The developers learned quite a bit about DLC with the game, and they are using what they have learned and applying it to Uncharted 4: A Thief's End.
Earlier this week Naughty Dog detailed three different editions of the game that are available for purchase, one of the editions included access to the "first-ever single-player story add-on for the Uncharted series and two multiplayer packs that will unlock new, rare and legendary multiplayer items." Basically, it comes with a season pass for DLC content.
Why did Naughty Dog decide to bring single-player DLC to the Uncharted series? Well, because of the success they saw with Left Behind. Speaking at the GameStop Expo, Naughty Dog's Arne Meyer gave some insight on the decision, "It worked really well for us for The Last of Us,” said Meyer, as transcribed by Gamespot. “We thought we could put together a really great piece of content as well [for Uncharted 4].”
Meyer went on to say, “I think we rose to the challenge for The Last of Us, so we decided we’re going to take another shot at it [for Uncharted 4].”
One can't help but feel as though success and the DLC working "really well" for them boils down to money and how well it sold. It almost seems as though they're saying, "we made some good DLC and a lot of people bought it — we want that to happen again." Then again, I think that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has had the best DLC model I've seen in years.
