A new Hellboy movie has been in the works for quite some time. Ron Perlman and Guillermo del Toro were trying to get a third Hellboy movie off the ground for years and after a meeting earlier this year with producers and the studio, they learned that their Hellboy story was ultimately finished without a definitive conclusion. It hurt both Perlman and del Toro who have been very vocal about getting this movie made and it hurt the fans just as much, if not more.
To make it even more painful, just a few months later a reboot of the series was announced. Yeah… pretty messed up. The studio capitalized off of the excitement of rabid fans who hoped we'd get a third Hellboy flick with Ron Perlman and spawned a reboot with Stranger Things star David Harbour signing on as the titular character.
For fans, this has been pretty controversial. While Harbour is great, many want Perlman and feel this was a big middle finger towards the people that launched Hellboy into the Hollywood landscape. Aside from some casting, news for the movie has been relatively quiet (aside from a white washing controversy that ended surprisingly well). However, we just got a big piece of news that begins to inspire hope for this movie.
The first look of David Harbour as Hellboy has been released, red skin, big fist, and all. You can take a look at two images below.
For comparison, here's what Ron Perlman looked like when he played Hellboy from 2004 to 2008. Truthfully, it looks like Harbour may have bulked up a bit more than Perlman and the makeup looks quite a bit better (but it could also be the lighting.
Hellboy is set to release sometime in 2018.
