Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today that the next installment of Spider-Man just found its new Peter Parker in 19 year old Tom Holland and its Director, the up and coming Jon Watts. In what has been described as an "extensive" search for the new actor and director, Marvel and Sony Pictures came out very pleased with the results.
Tom Holland is known for his roles in The Impossible (2012) and the TV Mini Series, Wolf Hall (2015) and was noted as making a strong impression in the upcoming film, In The Heart of the Sea (2015). As is par for the course with the selection process, Holland underwent a series of rigorous screen tests with other young actors, but came out on top, being described as "the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man's story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe" by Producer Amy Pascal.
Jon Watts is another young and relatively unknown Director and Producer, known for his work on Eugene (2012), Clown (2014) and Cop Car (2015), a thriller that most recently made its screen debut at the Sundance Film Festival. Sony Pictures Group Chairman, Tom Rothman noted, "I've worked with a number of up -and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe Jon is just such an outstanding talent."
The new Spider-Man Reboot is due to hit theaters on July 28, 2017.
