Four months after going entirely independent from Square Enix, IO Interactive has revealed that they will be announcing "upcoming content" later this month. They didn't say exactly what the announcement would be, only that it would not be anything in regards to a potential Hitman: Season 2.
Here's what they said:
Mark this date on your calendars: October 24th. That’s the date when we will reveal brand new content for the game.
We’re going to let the announcement itself do all the talking, but there is one thing we want to clarify before then; this upcoming content is not “Season 2”. We’re saying that now to keep expectations in check.
So, save the date, let’s hope it doesn’t leak and we’ll see you there!
Accompanying this announcement of an announcement was a teaser image, which you can check out below:
Earlier this year, there was a great deal of concern over whether the Hitman franchise would even continue after Square Enix looked to offload IO Interactive. It was unknown if the publisher planned to keep the IP or not, but after they didn't find a buyer, Square Enix chose to let IO Interactive keep Hitman, and the studio went independent.
Being independent sounds nice on the surface, but the studio now faces a lot more challenges than it did before. It's easy just to say "it'd be a good idea if they made a Season 2," but doing so is not as simple as that. Without looking at their books at what they've got in the bank, it's entirely possible that they may need to build up with smaller projects before undertaking the big one that everyone wants. Time will tell.
